Hair Growth for Women 101: The Science and the Results!
If you’re like us, day-to-day stress sometimes makes you want to pull your hair out. However, hair loss is a very real stressor (and response to stress!) that many women face today. This September, we’re focusing on hair growth techniques and products: In this blog, we’ll break down the science behind hair loss and recovery, as well as the hair products that will have you loving your lustrous locks before long!
Why do people lose their hair?
Hair loss can be traced to any number of causes: genetics, stress, autoimmune diseases, scalp conditions, and even nutritional deficiencies. While “male-pattern baldness” may be the term you’re most familiar with, when it comes to hair loss, women can face just as many stressful-scalp situations.
After menopause, “andronic alopecia” (or female-pattern baldness) is a typical part of life. As we age, our hair naturally becomes thinner and grows more slowly. Female-pattern baldness typically occurs in three stages: thinning around the hair part, a widened hair part and more thinning throughout our hair, and finally scalp-wide thinning, often accompanied by a see-through spot at the top of the scalp.
How can I promote natural hair growth or regrowth?
No matter where you are in your hair-care journey, there are ways to keep your scalp and hair as healthy and thriving as possible. These tricks run the gamut from simple home remedies to shockingly effective hair growth products.
For some people, natural remedies like scalp massage and essential oils can be extremely effective. For others, you might only need to switch up your shampoo. And for some people, especially those who have tried other options with limited success, you can improve hair growth and quality with specialty products.
Our environment has plenty of natural remedies to try. You can find them in hair care products, as essential oils, or — in the case of certain vitamins and minerals — as a daily supplement. As always before trying a new product, we recommend having a chat with your doctor or dermatologist to make sure it’s right for you. In general, these natural ingredients, oils, and extracts have been linked to improved hair growth:
- Aloe vera
- Coconut oil
- Fish oil
- Rosemary oil
- Lemon juice or extract
- Ginseng
- Onion juice
- Viviscal (a marine complex made from Vitamin C and sea life powders)
- Geranium oil
What products can I use to make my hair grow?
At Beauty Supply 123, we have a range of hair growth products available for women AND men. Here are just a few of our favorites!
Supplements
Hair growth supplements include many of the vitamins, minerals, and oils you’ll find in natural remedies — in a simple daily pill! For women, we’re big fans of Bosley’s Healthy Hair Vitality Supplements for Women. (There’s a great version for men, too!) When looking for a hair growth supplement, choose one with ingredients like biotin, niacin, and zinc. These minerals strengthen individual hair follicles and reduce the amount of hair we “shed” naturally, leaving plenty of room for natural hair growth!
Sprays
Hair treatments and styling sprays can also be designed with hair growth in mind. The most beneficial factor of a spray-on hair treatment is the way it protects new growth as well as your existing hair. We like Code B.’s Johnny B. Hair Prep, a hemp oil-infused biotin solution that acts as heat protection as well as a styling spray. For a formula more specifically created for hair growth, try Bosley’s Hair Regrowth Treatment Spray.
Shampoos and Conditioners
There are plenty of shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in products designed to promote hair growth. Our favorites are products that nourish the scalp as well as the hair, providing hydration and nutrition for thinning hair. For example, one of our most popular conditioners for hair growth is the Nutri-Ox Thinning Hair System Conditioner.
Kits
If you’re not sure where to start, give ‘em ALL a try! We’re big fans of haircare kits that give you a little bit of everything, especially for serum-based formulas that work best in tandem. For example, Bosley offers a mendXtend hair growth starter kit, including their classic mendXtend Shampoo and Conditioner, as well as a mendXtend Leave-In Treatment. (This isn’t in the kit, but we also REALLY like Bosley’s Healthy Hair & Scalp Follicle Energizer, a biotin and caffeine-enhanced leave-in treatment that targets thinning areas on the scalp. It’s packed with botanical extracts that promote hair growth and protect new hair!)
