7 Beauty Tips for Your Outdoor Summer Event

It’s a hot one out there, folks! With a heat wave blasting the East Coast and temperatures rising just about everywhere else, it’s time for one of the best things about summer: outdoor events!

We’re talking barbecues, music festivals, beer gardens—even those cool doggy bars that are half brewery, half dog park!

However, with some serious scorchers in the forecast, it’s important to practice excellent self-care during the summer months. Heat can wreak havoc on our skin and hair—but luckily, Beauty Supply 123 has you covered.

In this article, we break down some of our favorite beauty tips for outdoor summer events. Now if you need us, we’ll be at the food table!

Wear High-Quality Sunscreen (and Sunglasses!)

Say it with us… SUN! SCREEN! IS! LIFE!

Seriously, though, don’t mess around with the sun and your skincare. Harmful UV rays can cause major issues like skin cancer, sunburn, and that “chicken skin” feeling. Plus, excessive sunlight can do a lot of damage to our vision.

With that in mind, it’s important to pack a pair of sunnies and a high-quality sunscreen everywhere you go. We like Alba Botanica’s mineral-based sunscreen line, including a classic sun cream, a coconut-scented spray, a spray for sensitive skin, and a lotion just for your face

Wear the RIGHT Makeup, Not MORE Makeup

Whether you’re going all-out for a music festival or just grabbing some foundation before a backyard barbecue, the trick to making your makeup last is to wear less of it.

We sweat a LOT during the summer, and excess sweat + makeup = bad news for our pores. (Plus, have you ever had an eyeliner sunburn? We don’t recommend it.)

Use high-quality base layers like this primer and less-is-more mascara from Bodyography. In addition, take good care of your makeup brushes: remove gunk and sweat particles with a brush shampoo like this apple-scented vegan brush cleaner from Cinema Secrets.

While you’re at it, a high-quality setting spray is a great answer to the question “How do I make my makeup last in hot weather?” (We like this one from Model in a Bottle.)

Drink ALL the Water

Hydration is the name of the game during the summer. We drink more water when it’s hot out to, y’know, not faint, but increased water drinkage is also a great way to take care of your skin, hair, and nails.

To ramp up your water intake during summer, aim for about 12 cups a day (for AFAB folks) or 16 cups a day (for AMAB folks).

Use a Hair Mask at Least Once a Week

Remember what we said about hydration? The same is true for your hair. During the summer, excess sweat and sunlight, paired with wind, sea spray, and sand at the beach, can clog up our scalps and make our hair feel ratty, dry, and tangled.

The trick here is to treat your hair to a cool glass of water at least once a week. (Don’t, like, pour water on your head, though. We wish that worked.)

We’re talking about hair masks: Hair masks like this option from David Douglas pack much-needed moisture and healthy nutrients into your hair. Added ingredients like argan oil and shea butter work magic on our roots and ends, while healthy additives like vitamin C or chia seed protein protect the lengths and add maximum shine.

Invest in Natural Products

Did you know that all-natural products offer the best protection for your hair during the summer? With as much as we sweat (and get sunburnt), recipes with lots of chemicals can be irritating to our skin, especially around sensitive areas like our eyes and our scalp.

Summer’s a great time to switch to vegan products like this paraben- and sulfate-free shampoo from Be Care Love. (Bonus points: It smells like blueberry pie. And if that doesn’t sound like summer, we don’t know what does!)

You can find all our vegan products here. Try out a couple and see how your skin relaxes!

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate

If you deal with breakouts during the summer, clogged pores might be to blame. Sweat (of course) along with bacteria and dead skin can block hair follicles, stop up pores, and lead to annoying tagalongs like zits, ingrown hairs, and rosacea flares.

The trick is to exfoliate—correctly. You don’t want to scrub your skin with the power of a thousand power washers during summer. Instead, focus on gentle exfoliation that clears away gunk and the top layer of dry skin.

We’re big fans of this Body Buffer exfoliating body scrub. It includes peppermint oil, which is DELIGHTFUL on your skin after a long day in the sun. Plus, we use this gentle scalp exfoliator from Wet Brush. Pair with your favorite vegan shampoo and you’ve got a winner!

Also, this exfoliating sugar scrub and oil combo from Bodyography is like a spa day for your chapped lips, and we can’t recommend it enough!

And while we’re at it… Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

DON’T FORGET THIS STEP—after exfoliating, make sure to moisturize your skin during the summer. The amount of time we spend in the sun sucks the hydration out of our skin, making it easier to get heat rashes, sunburn, acne, or ingrown hairs. Whatever you took off by exfoliating, you need to balance out by locking in moisture.

A great way to do this is with regular face masks, like these hydrating face masks from Mask Society. We’re big fans of the #StayWoke and Chill Out versions: like Mask Society says, they’re perfect for “skin hangovers”!

For all-over moisture, we like Petal Fresh’s honey-coconut hydrating body butter or this coconut-scented little guy from Body Drench. If you need a head start on that summer tan, try out these tinted moisturizers from Million Dollar Tan and Bodyography.

And don’t forget to take care of your feet! Soothe cracked heels and blisters by slapping on a thick coat of your favorite moisturizer, then pull on these moisture-enhancing socks before bed. After an overnight snooze, you’ll be shocked how much softer and more nourished your feet feel.

Now, We’re Headed for the Beach
